With the advent of being able to successfully keep stony corals 20 years back it seems the price we paid was a lack of soft corals entering the hobby as everyone scrambled for the latest sps\/Lps coral to hit the market. Which is a shame as some stunning softies exist, without the heartache and stress associated with keeping them thriving. These trees tick all the boxes for a low maintenance softie or mixed aquarium. Bright, as in VERY bright lime green, great structure, interesting delicate polyps and pretty much bombproof to keep in a variety if flow and lighting conditions!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA quick note on the whole myth that seems to have perpetuated around trees being invasive. In our opinion this is simply incorrect! These corals propogate, when adults by inflating a branch, detaching it, causing it to float off and settle elsewhere. This branch then takes 1-2 weeks to attach were it settles and grow. Even our large trees only maybe drop one branch every couple of months. We don't really see how this constitutes an 'invasive' coral. If a branch falls where you don't want a new coral, simply remove it before it attaches! Once attached simply holding at the base and giving a gentle pull will remove a tree from rockwork...its not invasive, it's part of regular tank maintenance!! We personally paid £160 for a single polyp back then, desperate to see what the fuss was about! Our opinion, they are very unique, however they are also very variable in colouration between aquaria, dependant upon lighting and nutrient levels and those first showcasing photos, when they hit the UK scene were most likely heavily doctored\/shot under filters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey hold a solid place in the ranks of the 'ultra' and special polyps, but in our opinion should be valued closer to the £20 per polyp mark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are from the exact same colony you will see for sale elsewhere. If you have seen these online with the hot-pink outer ring and bright yellow centre, chances are you will be dissapointed, Under very high light and low nutrient levels you can get quite close to these colours, but they will never appear as bright as they do in said photographs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom our experience the most natural colouration of these palys is a baby blue mouth, surrounded by a yellow inner and an outer ring of red-purple. As mentioned colours are extremely variable dependant upon tank conditions. The ones in our photograph were from our frag tank with medium light in the ratio 2\/3rd white to 1\/3 blue. Under high lighting and good flow they develop pink polyps on a contrasting mauve stem and keep a lovely compact fluffy appearance! A far cry from ones kept in low light and no flow that hang onto existence as straggly grey specimens with dark brown polyps!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA quick note on the whole myth that seems to have perpetuated around trees being invasive. In our opinion this is simply incorrect! These corals propogate, when adults by inflating a branch, detaching it, causing it to float off and settle elsewhere. This branch then takes 1-2 weeks to attach were it settles and grow. Even our large trees only maybe drop one branch every couple of months. We don't really see how this constitutes an 'invasive' coral. If a branch falls where you don't want a new coral, simply remove it before it attaches! Once attached simply holding at the base and giving a gentle pull will remove a tree from rockwork...its not invasive, it's part of regular tank maintenance!! This name is now ubiquitous with this coral in the hobby.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen closed, the bright blue songe like mat defies what it is hiding. Often looking like no more that a blue smear on a frag plug\/rock , you could be forgiven for assuming it is just a bit of a blue sponge. It is however quite the wonder that sonething so small can expand and open into such a wonder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIntricate, serrated polyps emerge from the sponge, completely hiding it.
